The Little Free Pantry (LFP) Project is a nation-wide program to provide food to those who are food insecure started in 2016. They were modeled after the Little Free Libraries which have been in existence since 2009, and now have >150,000 all over the world. During the hardship of food insecurity especially during the Pandemic many Little Free Libraries also added food items.

Now the Little Free Pantry has grown to be worldwide also. The mini pantry movement is a grassroots, crowdsourced solution to immediate and local needs. Whether a need for food or a need to give, mini pantries help feed neighbors, nourishing neighborhoods. Its motto is Give what you can – Take what you need.

The local LFP project started before the pandemic but has been expanded since. The first LFP in Taos was placed at the site of Shared Table by the El Pueblito Methodist Church. Taos Immigrant Allies added many other  LFP - coordinating volunteers to steward, to help provide needed food for all in our communities – 24/7. Food distribution sites – St James, Shared Table, Questa Food Bank, etc.- are great and provide most of the food needed in our communities for those who are food insecure. However, many cannot go to their sites on the day and hours they are open. Or a family may find their pantry is empty and their children are hungry late at night. The LFP are not meant to be a grocery store but for emergency or urgent needs. It is a way for neighbors to share what they can/want with those in need in a secure confidential way. There are 10 LFP in the Taos area, with 5 churches and 40 stewards helping to feed the panties for those in need sponsored by Taos Immigrant Allies. Other organizations have also placed LFP in their area.

Each pantry has its own personality and a team of stewards to keep clean and supplied with food. Many in our community both give and take food from the pantry – to help each other.
