NOVEMBER NEWSLETTER
We are announcing that we are now the Immigration Program of B’nai Shalom Havurah, thus ensuring the direct advantage of a 501©3 organization for our supporters and grantors.

It has been months since we sent out a newsletter. We have been quietly continuing our services to immigrants, often in partnership with other community organizations, while working on our post-pandemic mission. It is time to bring you up to date on our accomplishments and hopes for the future.

Recent accomplishments:
We recently had another successful Backpack Program, working along-side other organizations to provide backpacks and school supplies for children in need.  We hope all children have a successful school year after a very difficult time for all.

We continue to sponsor Free Covid Vaccination Clinics to all who show up. These clinics are designed especially for those with no ID, Insurance or ability to make appointments who would otherwise have difficulty getting vaccines. The need for these clinics has grown as pharmacies/providers are short of vaccines or staff. After over 28 TIA-organized clinics and coordinating  more than 4770 Covid vaccinations given, we are considering our actions going forward.

As the pandemic has loosened its grip on families, schools and the workplace, inflation and other hurdles persist, so we continue to help immigrant families and individuals with critical needs, such as applying for Emergency Rent Assistance, paying for DACA fees, and obtaining gas money when travel to the border is necessary for legal reasons.  Border trips continue with SFNM coordinating. We continue to assist a disabled man, who has no family or ability to earn a living.

The Little Free Pantries continue to provide an important service for those who remain threatened by food insecurity. We are always in need of more LFP stewards, so please let us know if you can help. We give financial support to some LFP stewards who cannot always buy food for the pantries but are willing to restock food items and monitor the LFP.

The Mexican Consulate came to Taos for the first time in a few years and helped 72 people obtain IDs, passports, and other documents which are so important to getting jobs and more. We partnered in this process with Las Cumbres.

Our future plans:

The Holidays will be upon us soon and that is a huge time for us to help the families in need have presents for their children. Donations will be greatly appreciated, as we hope to provide gifts for at least 200 children. We have joined the effort by Twirl – AGLOW event 11/25th with other nonprofits, including Twirl, St. James (CYFD and Food Pantry referrals), Common Grounds, and Taos Behavioral Health/Nurturing Center.

In the new year we are initiating a women’s support group to help immigrant women make friends and find support among themselves, and develop new skills and relationships that will improve their quality of life and that of their families.  Taking our cues from what the women themselves hope for we will work with community partners to bring financial literacy, entrepreneurial skills, English proficiency and more to the participants. This is a big project, but we are committed to helping end the isolation many immigrant women experience and helping them become more connected to their community and all of Taos County.

The Holiday season is a wonderful time to give to others.  If you are able to assist us in our efforts to help immigrant families and individuals, please consider a tax deductible donation. All donations are greatly appreciated.

Donations can also be made in honor of family members and friends. Many of us have more “things” than we need, and want to help others.  If you want to donate in honor of a friend or family as a Holiday gift, we will send an acknowledgement of those gifts. Please include their name and address of those you are honoring.

Please help us help Taos children get back to school after a difficult year!!

Taos Immigrant Allies is joining a Special Project to provide backpacks and school supplies to local children.  We are coordinating with Sin Frontera to help our immigrant children get the school supplies they need for going back to school.  Our effort is joined by other non-profit organizations who will supply the same for non-immigrant children in need.  Together TIA and Sin Frontera have over 100 children in need of our help.  If you would like to help with this Special Project please consider a donation of $50 to cover a backpack and supplies for one child or multiple of the same. Of course a donation for any amount is always deeply appreciated.

Please consider ASAP – plan purchasing, packing supplies, and distributing by early August.
